Pacrock Festival, Pont-\u00e0-Celles<\/h2>\n

Le Pacrock<\/a>, in Pont-\u00e0-Celles, it\u2019s now an affair of the heart for many music fans. More than 6,000 people go there each year to listen to concerts for a weekend. A musical adventure which shows no sign of stopping.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u2018We launched the festival in 2003. At the time, we were organising small concerts at the Maison des Jeunes de Pont-\u00e0-Celles. And then, little by little, the festival grew\u2019, explains Alexandre Francart, festival coordinator. \u2018By 2011, we were scheduling big well-known artists from the pop rock scene. We were getting 3,000 \u2013 4,000 people per day, it was crazy. \u00a0In 2012, we decided to make it more of an alternative music festival.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

An alternative music festival<\/h2>\n

The concept of Pacrock is to discover something that you wouldn\u2019t see or hear elsewhere. \u2018We no longer want to showcase artists who already tour everywhere in Wallonia, we want to have other names,\u2019 explains Alexandre Francart. To choose groups, the organisers have a partnership with the cultural platform Vecteur<\/a> for the electro techno event on Friday evening and with\u00a0Rockerill<\/a> for the one on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n

The alternative spirit is also evident in the festival\u2019s site. The site is located in the parc du prieur\u00e9, between the village church and a railway line, the length of a road lined with 100-year-old trees.<\/p>\n

The catering approach is also alternative. \u2018We are supplied by local producers for meals and drinks, we have installed composting toilets, we established the principle of the reusable cup, recycling, minimising plastic use, etc. The decorations are made with recovered materials<\/em>,\u2019 explains Alexandre Francart. Several associations are also present on the site.<\/p>\n

Organised by a team of motivated volunteers<\/h2>\n

The organisers of the festival are volunteers. Around ten people work to coordinate the festival throughout the year. Other volunteers are hired specifically for preparing the festival and help during the event itself.<\/p>\n

A number of people are active behind the scenes so that the festival can be the best it can be<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A few hours before the launch, a number of people are working behind the scenes: some are painting the last signs, others are counting tickets, others are setting up the sound system and the lights. \u2018We are setting up the bar and the food stand\u2019<\/em>, explain three scouts in the process of fixing the last cable ties to a gazebo.<\/p>\n

Although the festival requires a high level of organisation, feedback is very encouraging. \u2018I am in charge of finding and managing groups of volunteers. It\u2019s all a case of logistics, in addition to my normal schedule, between work, family… At the same time, when I see the result, I am really happy,\u2019 explains Julie, volunteer manager. \u2018I\u2019m happy that the festival is continuing, I really want my children to experience it.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

More than 60 volunteers are required for the duration of the festival, from the Friday to the Saturday.<\/p>\n

Pacrock, symbol of the village<\/h2>\n

The festival goers are fairly diverse. A large number of people from Greater Charleroi, of all ages, come to the site, mainly due to the proximity of the event. Others come from further afield, generally to enjoy the concerts or just for the atmosphere. \u00a0\u2018Depending on the line up, the audience comes from Brussels, le Brabant Wallon, Li\u00e8ge, Namur\u2026 They are generally music fans, open to the music that we are offering,<\/em>\u2019 explains Alexandre Francart.<\/p>\n

There are also some tent pitches for those coming from far away or for those who don\u2019t have a mode of transport.<\/p>\n

Source of inspiration for other events<\/h2>\n

\u2018If other local residents were interested in organising a festival in their borough, I would tell them to define their niche. Greater Charleroi residents are very open, they enjoy events which are out of the ordinary,<\/em>\u2019 concludes Alexandre Francart.<\/p>\n
